Description

In 1971 or 1972, a scrawny teenager asked for and received the beautiful second volume of Nostalgia Press' Alex Raymond Flash Gordon reprints, either for Christmas or a birthday present. I've cherished this book for decades, and still have my dog-eared copy. My acquisition of this art represents the closing of a personal circle for me, as well as a collecting milestone, since this is my first Raymond original.

I've felt for a while now like I'm enjoying the hobby less, the more I've tried to compete with collectors with deeper pockets to collect comic book art (usually unsuccessfully). I doubt that I'm alone in having the recurring experience of watching a coveted page slip through my fingers because I couldn't afford it. So favoring strip collecting is beginning to make a lot of sense for me.

I've dabbled with picking up a daily here or there in the past, but never with concerted purpose or ardent effort. Yes, these have their fans, but seemingly fewer to arm-wrestle or outbid when something great comes to market. And most strips are relatively inexpensive.

What better way to start a serious collection of comic strip art, then, than with this luscious example of a 1953 Rip Kirby daily by Alex Raymond, from the classic storyline, The Affairs of Crusher Twickam? I had a chance to read this in Volume 3 of IDW's collected Rip Kirby hardcovers, and really dug it.

This is a charming and funny story about a burly prospector who's more than a little rough around the edges, but has made his fortune and decides now that he wants Rip and his man Desmond to teach him to be a gentleman.

I'll never own a Flash Gordon Sunday by Alex Raymond. But getting to ogle this beauty from a later period of the artist's stylistic evolution is its own rich reward and privilege.

First: shorten the beard; Second: change the entire wardrobe; Third... :) Beautiful and fun strip by the master!

I absolutely love this daily by the master! That center panel is magnificent. I know exactly what you mean about high prices and the attraction to daily strips. Fortunately, there's a lot of incredible dailies out there.

Very nice daily! I also got out of the comic book art world years ago and started collecting strips only. Now I have many little masterpieces covering my walls and love looking at instead of just one comic book page! : ) Nice one to start with btw!

You can tell Raymond had fun with this one - Crusher's jacket and shirt make for a great design. The inking in panel two is just spectacular!! Congratulations!!

This was a FUN story! It's interesting to me ... while I think of Raymond's Flash Gordon as the PINNACLE of comic ART, I can't really make myself read the story, His Rip Kirby art is not QUITE as gorgeous as FG, but it is still AMAZING, and the stories are thoroughly enjoyable to me. I am SO glad that IDW did the books ... they are GREAT, as is this particular example of art!

A magnificent example of Alex's craftmanship. Second panel is worth the price you paid. A great way to start a comic strip collection, well done!

Holy cow that's a beautiful strip!! You've got some great expressive hands in this one as well but the patterns really take the spotlight in this one! The skill and attention to detail it takes to make sure the pattern correctly wraps around the forms but never feels mechanical is incredible. Congrats on this one it's a real masterpiece.

What everyone else had said above - that second panel is classic Raymond.
