DescriptionI've admired dozens of painted masterpieces by Bill Sienkiewicz (and was lucky enough to own some of them), especially ones with his eternal muse Elektra. But this piece is by far my favorite Sienkiewicz piece in decades. Once I saw this piece with my own eyes, I knew it was special : its sheer size (about 17x21), all the mixed techniques, the care brought to the background, the colors (sorry for the pic, it didn't fit in my scan), its textures, etc. and of course the depiction in itself. That perfect summary of one of my all time favorite comics runs : DD, Elektra, their embrace, the fractured surface, the blood dripping, the loneliness, the menace of the Kingpin, the Church, the darkness, etc. Everything that mattered to me in Frank Miller's run was on that drawing. Considering I fell in love with Bill Sienkiewicz' art with his Daredevil GN with Miller and their Elektra ltd series, this felt like the definitive DD piece for me by my favorite artist. If I had dreamt of a perfect DD piece back then, it would have looked exactly like this. Although it's a recent piece, it brought back all the right nostalgic vibes : my 1986 self would be very happy for me ;-) I could talk about this piece for hours, I already spent months looking at it. While my other art pieces are all framed next to each other on small walls, this giant one is all by itself on my biggest wall in the center of my living room. Maybe I'll find another great Sienkiewicz piece in a few years that I'll like even better and I'll want to upgrade, but I doubt it as it took decades for this one to find me (and vice versa). I've often wondered what is my grail in my collection. The one piece. I had multiple answers. It probably means I hadn't found it yet. But now I know : I guess that all the collectors who have found their own grail know how I felt when I got mine. Sienkiewicz told the original owner this piece would be used as an IDW cover in a few months. Really cool if it does so more people can enjoy it, but doesn't change anything for me: I could not love it more ! Social/Sharing |

The question was asked to Sienkiewicz about the specific influence for these eyes : he just smiled and stayed mum... but I love the possibility of it ! Maybe it will remain a mistery similar to the Mona Lisa ;-)

I’m 99% sure those are his eyes. :)

I think being able to pick out one single piece in any collection is an almost impossible task. And if you ARE able to separate just one from all the rest, that it must be a very special piece indeed. Congratulations on finding and getting your grail. It certainly is a beauty.

This is INSANE. The few things that jump out at me are the thickness and texture of the paint and the dripping effect. Sienkiewicz's style proves his genius. Not every character or scene has to be hyper detailed. It adds to the mood of the character and piece. Just beautiful.

It would be perfect as a cover so I hope that happens. Sienk is a unique talent to be sure.
