A fantastic Werewolf by Ronan (Le Roy des Ribeauds, Ira Dei, Conan�) Toulhoat.

I met Ronan during a store signing this year. He had brought a portfolio of pages and illustrations and I obviously had to flip through it if only to help pass the time before my turn came up for a sketch.

When my eyes fell on this piece, it was love at first sight. I had no expectation for this signing other than to meet a nice artist and certainly no plan to buy art from him but this piece was an evidence.

Seeing the piece, it�s impossible for me not to think of Wrightson. For the subject itself and his Cycle of the Werewolf work but most of all for the obvious stylistic (and acknowledged) influence. Look at those lush inks and tell me you don�t see Wrightson in there. Totleben also comes to mind as he has a similar way to portray werewolves though I doubt it was an influence.

The speed of the werewolf�s jump is nicely rendered here, something which is Ronan�s own as I don�t see Wrightson using that kind of effect, his style being more illustrative than prone to use movement in his art.

All in all, a great Werewolf. Feral, vicious and dangerous as werewolves should be.

Done in red pencil and brush ink, the piece measures a bit more than 11 by 17.
