Cool! I'm not convinced this is oriented correctly, but it's a winner from any perspective
Though the final painting hangs right side up as it were, “Correctly” is a state of mind. Phil often turns drawing and even sometimes the paintings for display. Note Phil’s signature. It is as Ergon Schiele often liked to take props (a chair, a pillow) away and draw or paint only the figure, leaving them to clutch or squat on nothing, Phil often likes to take the seemingly obvious orientation of a piece and present it differently, as it involves the viewer as their minds push back, mentally insisting it be the other way round. For another instance of this, check out another recent drawing I posted of the woman with her back against the “ceiling”. There is most times something to chew on, or some little strangeness given to the viewer. As Phil once said, he is not too keen on painting just a “bowl of lemons”.
