DescriptionThe Savage Club began in London in the 1850s as a bohemian gentlemen's club. The membership began primarily as journalists and artists, but later broadened to include other professions. At the turn of the last century, artists would often design the dinner menu, making fun of something about the club at the same time. Lawson Wood (1878-1957), widely known for his paintings of his humorous chimpanzee Gran'pop, also did a good bit of cartooning for Punch magazine, mainly featuring his Stone Age people and dinosaurs. This is around the same time that numerous cartoonists were enthralled with this subject matter. Wood created this drawing for the April 28, 1906 Savage Club dinner, featuring, among other things, the very first club dinner. The ink work on the piece is really quite lovely, and is not captured well by the scan.Social/Sharing |
