Description

The Bradford Exchange produced twelve limited-edition collector's plates and porcelain ornaments to celebrate Disneyland's 40th Anniversary in 1995. This 11.75" diameter original graphite drawing on onionskin by Alvin S. White Studio was used as a rough layout design for the sixth issue in the series, "Haunted Mansion."

The image shows a detailed sketch of the Haunted Mansion on a moon-filled night sky ablaze with fireworks. A spooked Donald Duck clings for dear life to Goofy, as the anthropomorphic dog makes a hasty retreat from a very Marc Davis-esque Traveler Hitchhiking Ghost, who also appears to be looking for a ride. All the while, Tinkerbell soars through the scenery, leaving a trail of pixie dust behind. The four characters are pasted-on prints. Judging by the handwritten notes, it would seem that all three of the Hitchhiking Ghosts had originally been planned to materialize by the lamppost.

The final production cel cancels the fireworks display, dresses Donald and Goofy in dapper New Orleans attire, and portrays the lone Traveler in a cartoonier style.

Alvin S. White Studio, a graphic design company located in Burbank, California, has created many Disney-licensed consumer products over the years, including children's books (Walt Disney's Pinocchio Pop-Up Book), merchandise (Pooh & Friends porcelain keepsakes), computer software (The Walt Disney World Explorer), and record album covers (Mickey Mouse Disco).
