DescriptionI finally own a Steve Lightle cover and even more pleasant a Flash cover from his long and spectacular run on the title as cover artist.Lightle remains one of my top fav’ artists to this day and I fondly remembers those Flash covers. This is the cover to a title called “Honeymoon on the Run” which saw the return of Wally West. And that is part of the incentive for me as the Flash I am attached to as a character is Wally West which I prefer to Barry Allen. It’s just a generational thing and I have surely enjoyed the Rebirth iteration of Bart Allen (and his impactful death in Crisis), but I read Mark Waid, Millar, Morrison and Geoff Johns’ runs. I consequently find the treatment he has been given in the current DC (Rebirth) universe a bit sad as I got the impression it is a case of too many Flashes that somehow embarrass DC in the same way there are too many Robins. So let’s kill one of them from time to time to get an intense emotional story out of it. Only to bring him a few months/year down the line for the same effect. What I really appreciated from the above mentioned runs, is Wally’s strong relationship with (his wife) Linda. We don’t get many of those in super heroes comics (Spidey and Superman come to mind) and when they are believable and enjoyable, this needs to be said. Especially as this is a tendency from which current editorial trend is shying away from. My goodness, let’s keep them heroes in their mid-twenties forever and god forbid to have them being married in an adult relationship. This could frighten the kids (who obviously don’t have parents of their own) and shy them away from buying comic books they can’t relate to (kids being the obvious buying demography in current comics whose single issues cost 4$). But I digress. So I enjoy this cover for the reason it features the happy couple. Even though it is but a photograph. The bullets impact in and around it really tells a story and contrasts with the happy image. What could have happened to them during their honey moon that involves bullets? You’ll have to open and read the book to find out. Covers that tells a story or better than relates to the story inside is becoming a lost art sadly and I appreciate them all the more for it. As regards the cover itself, Lightle is a master at spotting blacks and using shadows & light (it’s probably a name thing) and this one is no exception. I love their faces that shows their love for each other. As I said, the bullets impact on the wall of the picture are a strong contrast to this happy feeling and the creepy impact bits and deep textured blacks Steve used on them are fantastic. His attention to detail really shines here. I am very pleased by this cover from a nowadays elusive modern master. This is part 9 of my 2019 CAF birthday. Social/Sharing |

Great pick up! I agree with your assessment of the current treatment of Wally West. I thought that the growth that the character went through in the absence of Barry was substantial, and that his relationship with Linda was a strength that reflected character growth. I dislike Wally’s treatment in the past 15 years since Infinite Crisis, and hate how quickly the character was discarded to bring Barry back to serve a function that Wally was filling more than adequately and is the reason that I have stopped reading the Flash.
I’m really happy that this piece is with someone who cares about the Wally/Linda relationship. I was eyeing this piece because of similar sentiments and I am glad that it is in a good home! Congrats again on the pickup!

Hi David and thanks for the comment. If you still like the Flash and would be interested in reading some good runs, I would recommend the flash by Manapul and Buccellato for nice writing and amazing art, then the current Flash written by Josh Williamson with art that ranges from nicely average to spectacular (Kolins, Porter, Di Giandomenico). Both with Bart Allen in the star role but still good stuff.
