Description

The Bradford Exchange produced twelve limited-edition collector's plates and porcelain ornaments to celebrate Disneyland's 40th Anniversary in 1995. This 12� diameter original graphite drawing on onionskin by Alvin S. White Studio was used as a rough layout design for the fifth issue in the series, "Pirates of the Caribbean."

The image shows the infamous bride auction scene in the pirate-sacked town, with the Auctioneer attempting to sell a hearty wench to a sloshed swashbuckler, while another captured villager, the Redhead, awaits her turn. Nearby, a looter with an eye for hats steadies his row boat, while a goat stands frozen on a ledge. A handwritten note instructs the artist to "raise art a little."

The final production cel places Mickey and Minnie Mouse as passengers in the boat, introduces another pirate to keep the Redhead roped and tied, enlarges the proportions of some of the characters, and invites Tinker Bell to the frantic mayhem.

Alvin S. White Studio, a graphic design company located in Burbank, California, has created many Disney-licensed consumer products over the years, including children's books (Walt Disney's Pinocchio Pop-Up Book), merchandise (Pooh & Friends porcelain keepsakes), computer software (The Walt Disney World Explorer), and record album covers (Mickey Mouse Disco).
