Dang....this is cool. The run up to WWW2 with Neville Chamberlain's "Peace In Our Time " to the blind isolatism in the Us before Pearl Harbour has eerie echoes in the No Deal Brexit Crowd and the toxic political witches brew that is the US today. Great pieces on their own but they still speak to us today
Agreed. Our current "return" to the pre-WW2 mindset might end up being seen, historically, with the 1950s-2010s as the outlying and unusual blip. What's equally interesting is how China fits into the picture. The 'sleeping dragon' era, starting in the early 1800s, followed by the creation of the PRC in 1949, was an 'exodus inward' that pivoted in the late 1970s. In 40 years, China has gone from bear skins and stone clubs to raw technological superiority in many areas. People are generally unappreciative of the raw rate of change there. The pre-WW2 era world did not exist with this player on the field.
Your comment about Roosevelt's futile telegram to Hitler, reminded me of another shameful infamous one in our history. The Irish Free state was only 25 years old. They were "netural" in WW2, with heavy nudge nudge wink wink nods to the Allies. But De Valera our Taoiseach/PM send a telegram of condolances on the death of Hitler and visited the German Ambassador. Political alliances are often insane...
Amazing. I never heard that story. Thanks.
