DescriptionCaptain America does not have a real strong rogues gallery as a solo act. Red Skull and Zemo are Hall Of Fame villains but the next spot could be filled by a number of characters. Since Bloodstone Hunt it would have to be filled by Crossbones. As big a fixture as Crossbones has been in Cap's title over the last 30 years (he did actually assassinate Cap at the end of Civil War with the help of a Dr. Faustus controlled Sharon Carter in Brubaker & Epting's Captain America #25) you almost think that such a key supporting character/villain would have made his debut much earlier. Crossbones first appeared in essentially a two panel cameo in Captain America #360 which was right in the middle of one of the greatest Cap adventures ever - the Indiana Jonesian Bloodstone Hunt. It remains one of my all time favorite comic book story arcs of any title and really does work as a great adventure serial. I wish Cap would have had more adventures like that. Crossbones was an agent of the Red Skull (and was actually trained by Taskmaster) and he really did not do much in Bloodstone Hunt except observe and swoop in at the very end in Captain America #362 to try and steal the Bloodstone but wound up kidnapping Diamondback as a consolation prize for Red Skull. He and Cap never even met during this arc. It is not until the very end of Captain America #363 that Crossbones entices Cap to give chase in the last page of the issue and ensnares him in a bear trap in the last panel. This incredible all out battle DPS by Kieron Dwyer and Danny Bulanadi - Cap and Crossbones grappling in every panel - represents the very first time they ever fought. Since Crossbones was played so memorably by Frank Grillo (and utterly wasted by Marvel Studios) he has achieved cult status among fans. I always viewed Crossbones as the Boba Fett of the Captain America property and he has remained one of my favorite villains since I first saw him in the comics 30 years ago. Great piece and right up your alley! Crossbones has a great design and I've enjoyed seeing him in varius books. Sweet DPS here of his first battle with Cap! Great art and a key moment - hard to beat! And nice frame job! Congrats!

Fantastic piece! I loved this run as it came out. Crossbones was a great addition to the book. I actually vaguely remember specifically picking up these bimonthly (?) issues.

amazing DPS. I remember this spread and was mesmerized by the style. Back when Capt. America was good.

Big fan of the character, series, & story arc. That's the nostalgic trifecta, right there!
And it's a damn fine looking dps, too.
