Description

Renegade Rabbit 1 p 1 (1984; ~p 21, Dec 1986)
By Craig Miller (1959-2012) and David Llewellyn
12 x 18 in., ink on board

Buddy Saunders recalls: “Craig was my first employee at Lone Star Comics, coming to work for me back in 1977. In those days, the Lone Star Comics “warehouse” was my two-car garage, and Craig would join me to pull comic orders after he completed classes at UTA. Craig continued to work for Lone Star, off and on, right up to the end of his life.”

During 1986-87, at the height of the post-TMNT b&w explosion, Craig created "Renegade Rabbit" and, throughout its five-issue run, commented on the state of independent comics at the time, including a Flaming Carrot parody named Blazing Celery. The fifth issue summarized what was, at that time, the entire decade-long run of Cerebus.

General summary of the Renegade Rabbit series: On another Earth in the near future, the old Borg regime has long maintained order. But the rabbit colony, living in peaceful submission for so long, has suddenly become rebellious.

At the center of the rebellion is the outlaw known as Renegade Rabbit. Whether dropping giant carrots on the city, or stealing the plans of a new weapon prototype, he’ll be a thorn in the side of the Borg government.

Even though he is pursued by government agents on one side, and the bounty hunter known as Elmuh Dudd on the other, Renegade Rabbit will never give up until his rabbit brethren are free.

Issue #1 contains:

A 20 pp. parody of “The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly” title “The Good, The Bad, & The Furry.”

A 7 pp. story with David Llewellyn (about whom I cannot find anything), a Daredevil parody titled “None So Blind”; I have a 5 pp. 1984 version of the story that was expanded to 7 pages for this issue. These scenes in these pages line up with the published pages as: the 1984 p. 1 is basically the 1986 p. 21; the 1984 p. 2 covers the 1986 pp. 22-23; the 1984 p. 3 appears on the 1986 p. 24; the 1984 p. 4 covers the 1986 pp. 24-25; the 1984 p. 5 covers the 1986 pp. 26-27.

A 5 pp. story with Tim Nolen (1964-), whom I was able to track down (
https://www.timnolenauthor.com), a Kirby monster homage titled “It Came to Eat Tokyo;” I have 4 of the pages.

Tim worked at Lone Star with Craig, where he was an “assistant comic buyer and grader, as well as local anime and Toho Studios expert… Craig was trying to cash in on the TMNT craze in the 80s. It was the first thing I ever wrote and got paid for.”
