“Stop Playing that Thing Off-Key” (1960s)

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

The caption is “Stop Playing that Thing Off-Key! Wanna Make’em Think We’re Stupid?” The anti-establishment youth movement in the 1960s was widely regarded as unpatriotic and mistaken – by the establishment. There is pretty much a straight line from the Beatniks from the Beat Generation, to Freaks, to the Hippies (remember that LSD was legal in the US until 1966), who became conflated with Underground Press, anti-work, pro-drug, and anti-war subcultures.
