Description

Shary Flenniken drew this large (11x14) sketch for me circa 1976. I was a big fan of her frequent contributions to the National Lampoon magazine's funny pages. She had been part of the Air Pirates, a collective of west coast underground cartoonists. They had published 2 issues of Air Pirates Funnies (1971) and were subsequently sued by the Disney Co. for some questionable depictions of Mickey & Minnie. At a NYC convention, several artists were raising money for the Air Pirates Defense Fund (a forerunner of the CBLDF), who continue to fight censorship to this day. As I asked Ms. Flenniken for a sketch, she asked where I was from and then proceeded to draw this great piece.

A collection of Trots and Bonnie was recently published, so I wrote Ms. Flenniken to ask the best place to purchase her book. I got the chance to remind & thank her for this moment. She was wonderfully gracious and offered to send my choice of bookplates for my book. After some delay, she finally sent the bookplate and a cool card along with it, as seen in the additional scans.

A special sketch, and a great wrte-up, Josh. Trots and Bonnie was a terrific part of National Lampoon (back when National Lampoon was terrific, too).
