DescriptionSometimes, I wonder how many versions of a finished cover there actually are. I mean, artists only get paid for one. Why finish more than one version? As I understood it, when Benes drew the cover to Superman 223.. featuring Superman and Supergirl... he actually completed three versions. This is the second version of the cover. If you compare this to the final published cover, you'll see that they are quite similar save a few minor differences. In the published cover, Supergirl was moved down to allow for the placement of the logo, Earth was smaller and moved down in the page in a similar manner, and Mariah Benes inked that version. But, basically, the Superman and Supergirl figures are identical.Social/Sharing |

I think it really speaks to the intergrity of an artist when they go to the trouble of doing as many versions as necessary until they fulfill their artistic vision. Obviously, as you stated, they only get paid for the one. But it's more about caring what you put out there, than just collecting a paycheck. This version is a great credit to Benes as an artist. A stunning example of an artist's effort to "get it right."

Off the top of my head, I think this is the best of the three. Congrats.
