Description

Oh baby! I have wanted an early Outcault Buster Brown strip for years, and the stars finally aligned to bring this beauty into my life. Large, hilarious, beautifully rendered, with still vibrant colors after 110+ years. For someone like me who loves early comic strips, this is a treasure. Obviously, Outcault was one of the early fathers of comic strip art, and the Yellow Kid had already established him as a master before Buster Brown made him a legend. Like everyone of my era, I grew up going to Buster Brown shoe stores years before I knew about the strip. The shoe business may not be a mainstay of American culture anymore, but it’s hard for me not to get a flash of nostalgia when I see Buster Brown and Tige. That said, I’ll take the strip art over the shoes any time. It’s a good day.

I completely agree-- plus this strip is suprisingly sophisticated for a strip that is over 100 years old...a large and impressive piece of art!! Well done Ben, you have a world class collection!

What a terrific example of Richard Outcault's Buster Brown! I don't think most people realize how advanced comic strips were 100 years ago. It's interesting to compare this strip to Calvin and Hobbes. Both feature little boys who make trouble and are quite destructive. Both feature animals who talk and try to stop their owners from creating quite so much trouble. Both were well drawn and made readers smile. But I bet this strip didn't cost you nearly as much as a Calvin and Hobbes would.
