Description

Thornton Fisher (1888-1975) enjoyed a robust career as a cartoonist, working on a variety of comic strips and panels for various papers. But it was his sports cartooning for the New York Evening Journal that brought him the most acclaim in the 1920s. Fisher’s work was syndicated by the Hearst machine, which allowed from around the country to see his work. Interestingly, Fisher’s cartoon career wound down in the late 1920s, as he turned his skills to radio, where he spent decades as a popular sports analyst on NBC radio, among other stations.

I’m pleased to be able to offer up a wonderful boxing cartoon by Thornton Fisher, which appeared on October 21, 1922. The sports cartoon depicts two fights from that night at the original Madison Square Garden, with Charlie White beating Sid Marks in a second-round knockout, while Bobby Michaels took a shellacking from Andy Thomas in the undercard. The cartoon features some sweet figure drawing, all done live during the fight. Measuring 13½”x 18½”, the cartoon is in VG condition, with two creases on the back; one of which is split at the lower edge, away from the live art area. A terrific piece of cartooning from an era when boxing was the king of sports. $85.00 + 15.00 Priority Mail shipping.
