Destiny #1 Cover (1997) Kent Williams

"You can't go home again." After more than a dozen years, this painting has returned home with me, and it feels just as good if not better.

The piece has a real presence and is intimidating in person. There's an effective combination of detail next to broad strokes, out-of-focus ethereal figures and high contrast detailed figures. Kent just lets it all go...slices into the wood, layers of paint next to thin areas next to a perfectly incorporated photo stat that frames the piece and was then used on all three series covers. There are thinned paints smeared almost childishly with a finger next to an amazingly refined oil rendering of the human form like only Kent can do.

The art is edge-to-edge on a 20x24" wood panel. Framed in my house, it feels like a gigantic, normally unwelcome guest making sure I keep idle time to a minimum.

The art only image I've got is old and blurry and missing a lot of detail, but the included image of the actual comic book shows much of what's missing. The piece was also published as the cover to the Destiny TPB.
