Description

Philip Burke is one of my favorite contemporary illustrators. His large-scale acrylic painted caricature portraits are something to behold, with an incredible use of expressive color and brush work. His work often reminds me of the painter Alice Neel, with the seeming intuitive approach coupled with incredible skill.

I recently ran across this illustration of Pete Rose, simply signed "Burke". But I knew enough of Philip's earlier black and white work that this one rang some sort of bell to me. I reached out to him and sure enough, it was one of his. He was able to ID it as a New York Times illustration for me. I won the piece at auction and then proceeded to do some research. It turned out that the piece appeared in the Op-Ed section of the New York Times on July 8, 1991, accompanying a piece written by James Reston, Jr., titled Put Rose Almost in the Hall of Fame. Reston asked the question, what do you do with disgraced figures who would otherwise be in the Hall of Fame. Reston also wrote a book titled, Collision at Home Plate: The Lives of Pete Rose and Bart Giamatti.

The artwork is large and magnificent, with Burke's wonderfully rambling ink line that conveys so much information with seemingly little means. The illustration is framed, so I can't provide a great straight-on shot, but there is one detail in the additional images, as well as an image of how the piece looked on the newspaper page.

This piece came out of the Richard Merkin Collection of baseball memorabilia.
