John McCutcheon (1870-1949) was considered the dean of editorial cartoonists during the first third of the 20th century. With a gentle pen line that could capture loads of information, McCutcheon may not have had the sharpest pen nib of political cartoonists, but he was certainly in there swinging elbows. This incredible editorial cartoon, from July 25, 1927, features President Calvin Coolidge demonstrating his fishing abilities during his much ballyhooed vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota that summer. Much was made of the President�s attire while fishing, in suit and tie, and wearing a large hat. While the area was touted as trout heaven, the fish seemed to have other plans during Coolidge�s two-week stay. The piece ran on the front page (!) of the Chicago Tribune, accompanied with the following caption: �The President Gives a Successful Demonstration, Except That He Caught No Fish�. The detail in this drawing is amazing, and the piece is packed with 42 figures! McCutcheon drew the 14��x 12� cartoon on a lightly textured board and added a very light tone in areas. There are two light tape stains in the upper margin, one stain in the lower margin that enters slightly into the live art area, and a very light stain along the right edge.
