DescriptionI admit it. I was a ROM fan. Based on the Parker Brothers toy with LED eyes, Bill Mantlo was given the assignment to create a comic book based on their new galactic space knight toy. What's not known by many people is that Parker Brothers gave Mantlo little more than that to work with. From that brief description, and with the able assistance of Sal Buscema, he created the universe of Galador and Dire Wraiths. I was hooked from the start. Like all great extra terrestrial heroes, ROM was initially misunderstood by the people of earth. Feared and hunted, even as he worked to save our sorry world, ROM proved himself a hero over and over again. I think ROM has been rebooted as a comic by IDW, but it's the Sal Buscema/Bill Mantlo days that tug at my heart. Here is a cover, drawn by the versatile Al Milgrom from issue #49. The additional image shows the art without the wavy lines effect (drawn on a separate board). Social/Sharing |

Love it! Who knew a dud toy (in terms of sales) would have such a long and impactful run as a comic book.

"...and by the time he realized that the cover read "ROM" and not "TO RON", it was too late - Ron had already bought the ROM cover..."

Nice cover of the peak of the series, near the climax of the Skrulls-Dire Wraiths. Congrats!
