Description

During the 1950s, 1 of every 4 comics published was a romance comic and Harvey Comics was one of the more prolific publishers. Some of the stories were rather - out there. And then the Comics Code happened. Harvey's answer was not to do more stories but to edit what they had to fit the new rules. Primarily that meant changing word balloons, and often redoing panels to tone them down... lower hemlines, raise the neckline, make breasts smaller, etc..

This is the art for another complete 5-page story by Harvey regular Tom Hickey. Hickey was known for his pretty girls and attention to detail and drew a number of romance jobs for Harvey during the 1950s. This story, like a lot of Harvey's Romance stories, appeared twice. First as Price-Tag on Passion in First Love Illustrated #28 (May 1953) and retitled as Price-Tag on Life in First Love Illustrated 62 (Mar 1956) as a means for the Harvey editors to avoid the attention of censors if the title sounded "too erotic".

As I mentioned, romance stories allowed writers to explore any profession. Here, Gloria is head-over-heels in love Steve. The problem was that Steve was a test pilot, and she didn't want him in such a dangerous profession and it came down to choosing... Gloria or flying. Which would he choose?

These are twice-up pages with an image area of approximately 12" x 18" and the pages are in excellent condition. Not a horror story, but a really nice example of Hickey's art with lots of pretty girls, detailed figures and great inking... like the splash. And the wacky 50s... who goes to see a fighter jock wearing gloves and a frilly dress? I can show scans of other pages if needed.
