DescriptionDuring the 1950s, 1 of every 4 comics published was a romance comic and Harvey Comics was one of the more prolific publishers. Some of the stories were rather - out there. And then the Comics Code happened. Harvey's answer was not to do more stories but to edit what they had to fit the new rules. Primarily that meant changing word balloons, and often redoing panels to tone them down... lower hemlines, raise the neckline, make breasts smaller, etc..This is the art for a complete 5-page story intended to appear in First Romance Magazine #53 (circa 1959?) but the final issue was issue 52. As such, it is unpublished and there aren't any credits anywhere; I can make a guess but that's all it would be. Many romance stories depicted heartless guys who took advantage of women. This was a bit of a turn-around. Here, John Monrow had been going steady with Denise for over a year when she abruptly began seeing Grant Fletcher. While the two guys were in a jealous tussle, they accidentally knock Gloria down the stairs and she suffers a traumatic spine injury, paralyzing her. Both John and Fletch continue to visit Gloria, but John dedicates himself to becoming an orthopedic surgeon solely to devise a means to heal Denise. The surgery he performs is a success and John then asks Gloria to marry him. Her reply comes as a letter telling him she had married Fletch the week before, but she was grateful for all he had done. These are twice-up pages with an image area of approximately 12" x 18" and the pages are in excellent condition. Not a horror story, but a really nice example of late-Harvey romance art with lots of pretty girls, detailed figures and great inking... like the splash. I can show scans of other pages if needed.
