DescriptionBatman #556 (1998), for the story "Help, Trapped, Money, Rescue, Ruins". This issue, which featured Norm Breyfogle on pencils throughout, is part of the Cataclysm crossover event (formally the "Aftershock" storyline) that ultimately led to the "No Man's Land" arc. Each word in the title of the story corresponds to an event that happened in that order, which I always thought was kind of fun. The story also features a bunch of the Bat family, including Batman, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Alfred, and Lucius Fox. The action packed cover, with Batman regulating at the Bank of Gotham, was done by the amazing Brian Stelfreeze. Art is done on 11" X 17" art board in pencil and ink.Social/Sharing |

When you do b&w right, it doesn't even need to be colored.

Dynamic cover! Fabulous image of the Dark Knight and a mobster slugging it out inside a bank! Powerful use of contrasting blacks and whites makes this layout striking!

I agree! And the pic doesn't even do it justice. The contrasts are even more pronounced in person. I have always loved Brian's work. One of 2 covers I have by him (though I don't think I have listed the other yet...I should do that!).

This is a beautiful example of graphic design and brilliantly executed. I also love it because it appears Batman is fighting Luca Torelli, the hitman from Jordi Bernet's Torpedo series!

I love the way Stelfreeze frames much of the scene with the background window. Very dramatic. Congrats.
