Description
Here's a great cover featuring 3 of Steve Ditko's creations; Spider-Man, Doctor Strange & Xandu. Spider-Man first appeared in Amazing Fantasy. Dr. Strange first appeared in Strange Tales #110. Xandu first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #2. All 3 of these characters were created & drawn by Stever Ditko originally.

Marvel Team-Up #21 is the second appearance Xandu, an evil wizard who tried to defy Dr. Strange. In this issue, Xandu uses Spider-Man to break into Dr. Strange's home and steal a crystal, which he then uses to recreate the Wand of Watoomb. When Spidey and Dr. Strange attempt to battle Xandu, he teleports them to another dimension and causes their powers to cease working. Strange casts a spell that allows him to use Spidey's powers and Spidey to use magic and the pair take down Xandu. Dr. Strange tries to resurrect Xandu's love Melinda, but finds that she is completely dead.

Love this great Gil Kane cover.  And this issue has a very special place in my heart.  The only letter I ever had published in a Marvel comic Letter Page was one I sent in after reading this issue.  I think I actually still have the postcard they sent out notifying me that my letter was selected.  Anyway, congratulations on another Kane Bronze Age classic.

I'd love to know what your letter said & what the Marvel reply was!

Ha!  Considering how old I was back in 1974, you're probably not missing much.  I'm sure it was just another gushy fan letter telling them how cool of a team-up it was.  And then, like most letters for that title, I probably just listed a bunch of characters I wanted to see team up with Spidey.  I'd like to think I've become a much better writer (with a more mature vocabulary) in the last 45 years.  But I doubt there's anything the 1974 version of me has written that would be worth reading.  LOL!  Congrats again on this wonderful Bronze Age gem.

I have very fond memories of this story, although I first read it when it was reprinted in a Marvel Treasury Edition.  What a sensational cover, thanks for sharing!

Clearly, Xandu isn't truly unspeakable...this is an amazing cover! My eyes have been opened to how good Kane art can get, and now I'm looking for myself. I love everything about how this cover is set up, from the puppet strings to Strange's and Spidey's battle poses. Awesome stuff. Congrats!

BEAUTIFUL, West!  While it's true that any OA page that involves the combo of these two characters (Sorry, Xandu!  I meant THREE characters!) is a treat, some are definitely 'treatier' than others, and without question, this is one of those.  Great composition (how could you NOT buy this book back in 1974?) in the inimitable Kane style.  SO cool.  Awesome pick up, my friend.  Sincere congrats!

Despite their obvious stylistic differences, Gil Kane proved to be an extraordinary successor to Ditko, even on his most off-beat creations! Outstanding cover, of course!

Awesome cover, you can see that Gil had fun with Xandu's expression and pose; and love your point about three Ditko creations being represented.  So cool!

I think my favorite team-up is Spider-Man & Dr. Strange, and Kane & Giacoia show exactly why they’re a great team-up too, congrats!
