DescriptionHere is something you don't see every day. It is a letter from Don Heck to a fan, written on October 31, 1978. The fan had apparently written Don asking for an interview. Don humbly replies, "I'm just a quiet guy who draws comics for a living and cannot guarantee that there will be that many who would be interested in your interview." He goes on to suggest a day and time for the phone call that would make it less expensive for the fan.Around the time the letter was written, Don was drawing comics for Marvel, Western/Dell, and DC, including Batgirl in Batman Family and Detective Comics. His resume included co-creating Iron Man, seminal runs drawing the Avengers and X-Men, and numerous other milestones. But he was not, in his own words, "the outspoken rebel that seems to get attention."I don't know if the fan ever did the interview, but I hope so. I regret never having the chance to meet Don myself. But this letter is a treasure that embodies the character of a man I truly admire. Sincere thanks to my friend Aaron for this priceless birthday present.Note: I think the letter may have been written with a brush, which would make sense since Don was inking some of his own pencils at the time.Social/Sharing |
