The Mad Titan, in his quest to impress and prove his love for Mistress Death, acquired the six Infinity gems and created the Gauntlet to focus the enormous energies of the gems, transforming him into the most powerful being in the Universe. This story was used as the basis for the over-arching plotline in the Marvel Studios films, making Thanos and his quest for the gems the main threat.
