Draft for Clowes's cover to Daniel Handler's novel Adverbs

Illustration project by Daniel Clowes, one of the most important American comic and illustration artists. It was created as one of two proposals for the cover of Adverbs by Daniel Handler – a writer better known under the pen name Lemony Snicket, author of the bestselling series A Series of Unfortunate Events.

True to his distinctive style, Clowes employs clean linework and a muted yet expressive color palette, giving the image both a grotesque and melancholic tone. The design visually resonates with Handler’s subversive, ironic humor, forming a remarkable example of dialogue between literature and the art of illustration.
