I was able to gather several Star Wars bronze sculptures over the years. My first art purchase was actually the 9” Yoda bronze (See it
HERE ) by master sculptor Lawrence Noble way back in 1991. It jump-started my interest in original Star Wars art. One of my favorite Star Wars bronze statues ever produced is the Rancor by sculptor Randy Bowen, who has a prolific body of work including Marvel and other superhero properties. I spent a lot of time admiring the details on this beautifully sculpted piece. The sculpt of Rancor's rough, thorny and scaly textured hide, the Gamorrean guard in a deathly grip, and even the tiny bone remains on the chamber floor are all fascinating to look at up close.
Bowen released three Star Wars bronze statues through Dark Horse Comics starting in 1996 with Boba Fett (See it
HERE ), then Darth Vader in 1997 and completing with Rancor in 1998. Each of these elusive editions were limited to 50. Rancor was originally set at 50 as well, but only 30 were actually cast. This Rancor bronze is an Artist Proof. It has an “AP-0” marking near Bowen’s signature hallmark. There are just two Artist Proofs and they were never offered to the public. The other Rancor AP, which was part of filmmaker Frank Darabont's collection sold at an auction in 2019.
