Ralph Steadman was thrown into the spotlight during his artistic period with Hunter S. Thompson when he collaborated on the birth of GONZO journalism with his classic black humor illustrations for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and the Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved. His work appeared in countless publications, among them The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Independent, The Guardian, and The Observer. He illustrated a number of literary classics, notably Alice in Wonderland, Animal Farm, Treasure Island, and Fahrenheit 451. He created the art for Flying Dog Brewery (Maryland) and cover art for records by musicians such as the Who (1967), Frank Zappa (1997), and Slash (2010). He also wrote a libretto for British composer Richard Harvey’s eco-oratorio, Plague and the Moonflower (1989), which was performed in a number of cathedrals in England. Steadman wrote several books, including Sigmund Freud (1979), I, Leonardo (1983), The Grapes of Ralph: Wine According to Ralph Steadman (1992), and Still Life with Bottle: Whiskey According to Ralph Steadman (1997).
