Description

I performed in Gilbert & Sullivan operas and other theater productions for 30 years, during which time Bernie Wrightson and Barry Windsor-Smith would sometimes come to my performances. Bernie also got involved with production of a couple, doing set and costume designs for "Yeomen of the Guard," and these portraits for the gallery of ancestors whose ghosts come to life haunt the hero in "Ruddigore."

The soldier is a portrait of my good buddy Mark Kuprych, and the clergyman is actor, singer and chemist Benedikt Kellner.

Bernie and I worked on these together in his studio. He did most of the body, and I the face, of the soldier, but the Clergyman is all Wrightson. These are painted on muslin, and are about 5 1/2 feet tall. They were hung like curtains in the gallery picture frames on set. and the actors, dressed in identical costumes, appeared from behind them for the haunting number in Act 2.

I have a photo somewhere of me and Bernie working on these, which I will post if I find it.

Perhaps they are the largest Wrightson originals that exist?
