Ultimate Spider-Man 159 page 11 by Mark Bagley & Andy Lanning

This is a great page for anyone who considers themselves a fan of Ultimate Green Goblin. Unlike yourself and fellow collector Paul P however, I think this was one of the lamest, most unimaginative character redesigns in comics history. A standard "demon from hell"? Really? We've seen this character millions of times in the backgrounds of any panels of any comic which had scenes featuring "demons from hell" in them. 

But character design aside, as I said right off the bat, this is a spectacular Bagley example!

Ultimate Green Goblin came before the first Raimi movie was released, so there must have been discussions on what each would look like and what Bendis and Bagley had to avoid for the movie, toys, etc.  The regular line was avoiding Green Goblin stories all together.  So it probably was "the powers that be" (before Disney) which pushed them to this design with no thought of synergy as usual.  This page sets up the ultimate fate of Ultimate Perter Parker and does so with Bagley's most impassioned work, knowing how monumental it will be.

The only thing better that the first Faboom is the second.

Man, if they'd gone with proper anatomy, that shot from behind the Goblin would be...interesting. It is pretty goofy when they won't show anatomy, but burn people to a crisp, but it does make for a good baddie action page. It's a very cool page from Bagely, and Lanning supported it with strong inks. Congrats!

Great page, F M!  I really like Lanning's inks here, and (even though they weren't as "fine" in their detail as those of the awesome and underrated Andrew Hennessey during Bagley's first run on the book), the shading and textures here fully support the conflagration they're chronicling.  I think they're really well done.  It must be a great sight to see in person!

Even though your page falls "late in the run", Mr. Bagley was obviously returning recharged and ready to rumble.  I thought his work was really solid on this arc - absolutely as focused and fantastic as at any point of his earlier, historically long run.

Norman Osborne sure got a lot of love throughout Mr. Bendis's tenure at Marvel; he was always around in Ultimate Spider-Man in some form or another (even providing the proverbial spider that bit Peter... AND Miles) and caused some trouble over in Secret Invasion, and New, Dark and "regular" Avengers.  As a fan of the character, I loved him in the spotlight, and ultimately (so to speak) bought into the 'demon look' after a while because the stories were fun and the design wasn't going anywhere.  Bagley drew the heck out of it, for sure, and Stuart Immonen hit it out of the park on his run (which you have TWO AWESOME examples of...  You must mean this is your first BAGLEY USM page...)
