The uncanny canned laugh track was being phased out in comedy that year with Hooperman, The Wonder Years, Sledge Hammer, Flip Maxwell and more.  This would have been an allusion to that.

Thanks for sharing another great Animal Crackers strip!  Btw, did you know that the executives wanted to have a laugh track for the 1965 TV show "A Charlie Brown Christmas?"  Thankfully, Charles Schultz put his foot down.   And though M*A*S*H had a laugh track (which was very questionable), they always dropped it when the docs were in the O.R.  Anyway, some fun laugh track facts for you.
