DescriptionBatman #709 Original cover art (June 2011), for the story "Judgement on Gotham, Conclusion: Secret Sin". The Judgement on Gotham crossover event was a continuation of the cancelled Azrael series and features Batman facing off with the Angels of Death (Azrael, The Crusader, Fireball), as well as Ras and White Ghost of the League of Assassins. The series was bookended in Batman 708 & 709, with Part 2 in Red Robin 22 and Part 3 in Gotham Sirens 22. The cover for this final issue features Azrael large and in the background with Crusader in front and Fireball dying while the city is falling apart due to the actions of the League, with Batman, Catwoman, and Red Robin looking on sadly.I said 708 is one of my favorite covers by Guillem, but this one is pretty darn close. This is one of the most detailed covers I have ever seen by him, and they are absolutely stunning. I enjoy diving into various parts of the piece to absorb everything going on. Both Azrael and Crusader are nearly cover quality on their own in the amount of detail, and you can really feel the depth in the image with the Angels in the background and the Bat Family looking toward them and their city that is falling apart. It is easy to feel sorry for Fireball as he is dying and ultimately sacrificing his life. This cover is accomplished in pencil and ink on one 11" X 17" art board. The prelim here is cool given all the notes that Guillem wrote about what he wanted the image to portray. The Angels are pretty much in the same spot, though the Bat family moved around, including the addition of the gargoyle. I also love how Guillem takes his influence from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible as he put this image together. That story had some intense images associated with it, so definitely not a bad choice for such an intense and destructive scene. This prelim is a bit unusual in that it is only done in pencil. Most of the prelims I have for Guillem pieces are done in ink or even paint and are rarely black and white. His notes are also more detailed than usual. I really enjoy seeing the process here! Sweet! More! Or should I say encore? Love the consistency of these covers. Hellfire and Gotham...like peanut butter and chocolate! Made for each other.

There's a lot going on and it looks like it was planned that way to work in layers with us on the outside, our heroes in the foreground, and Azrael reduced to John Paul Valley.

Another lovely March cover. The work on the Azrael figure in particular is really splendid!

All it needs is a tad more detail and rendering and it's perfect! Huge congrats!
