Description
This may be one of my favorite drawings in my collection. Noel Sickles was 23 years old when he drew this scene in his hometown of Chillicothe, Ohio. Sickles' father Royal was a ticket agent for the B&O Railroad, so it makes sense that he would've spent time down at the railroad yard. What impresses me most about this drawing is exactly what Sickles left out of it. He gives the impression of every nut and bolt on these locomotives without actually drawing them in. It's a masterful depiction of shadow and light and machinery. 23 years old. Sigh.

Sickles was always a master of design, shapes and simplification. this is the perfect example of why he was so good.
