Description
Skullkickers was a comedic fantasy book from Image that lasted 34 issues. 35 counting issue 0.
As most comics do around issue 19 the sales began to dip. What they decided the book needed to increase sales was another issue 1 and adjectives because both increase sales. So Issue 19 was labeled Uncanny Skullkickers 1 and cover was a homage to DC 52 issue zero. (Cover is in my gallery as well). It worked. Sales increased. So to keep the joke going issue 20 was released as Savage Skullkickers 1, an homage to Savage Wolverine 1. More sales followed. Notice a funny trend starting here? Issue 21 was released as Mighty Skullkickers 1, an homage to Mighty Thor 337. Issue 22 released as All New Secret Skullkickers 1, an homage to Uncanny X-Men 125. And one final hit to the dead horse. Issue 23 was released as Dark Skullkickers Dark, an homage to Green Lantern 85. Covers went back to normal after this, well as normal one can expect with this book.

No Monkeys were harmed in the making of this comic. Well except for the 3 on page 3. And the 2 on page 4 but that's it. From page 5 on its all smooth sailing. Warning. May be some Dwarven nudity but what's a fantasy story without naked dwarves.

Love the cover design and the background art is stupendous.

This is a Frank Cho inspired homage by Huang and he's hella good at it.  The contrast of background and the main figure is striking with delicate work.  Elves, dwarves, orcs, etc. will soon find that a kick in the head is just what the fantasy genre savagely needs.

If they actually kick skulls, all the better!

That'd be cool if Huang starts a trend to homage Cho's Savage Wolverine #1 cover. There's so much to be done with that background like Skullkickers does.

A great cover and a issue #1 were meant to increase sales. And from your description I gather it worked. But is the series worth a read?

If you enjoy a laugh then I recommend wholeheartedly. May be my most favourite book ever but I'm a fantasy nerd as well.

We built this...We built this city on Naked Dwarvesssss...Oooohhhhhhhhhh! That really is a funny cover idea. They should have just kept it going, and gone more obscure. I like when comics make me feel less dumb than I am. References are fun. Did you notice that they made the elf much more wholesome than the Wolvie cover? Another great humorous page, John. Congrats!

Yes I noticed but they already reached the scantily clad quota for this issue. 5 monkeys dead. Check. Naked dwarf. Check. Great issue folks. Send to the printer.

Nice homage and sweet piece of art in its own right! "The Sweet Skullkickers!" What do you think?! Definitely dig the contrast between the foreground character and the background. Do what you gotta do to sell dem books! Congrats!

Can we add sassy as well? The Sweet Sassy Skullkickers. I would buy at least 2 copies.

I don't know much about Skullkickers (except that Chris Stevens, who I'm a huge fan of, was involved early on but no longer), but this is hilariously genius. Oh yeah, and the art is fantastic - congrats!
