Description

If any artist could be said to have been truly boned by history, it would be Stanislav Szukalski, the visionary sculptor and illustrator. A member of the Chicago Renaissance set (along with Carl Sandberg, Ben Hecht and others), he was acclaimed as Poland’s greatest artist in the 1930s. Most of his work was destroyed in Warsaw during WW II.

After the war, he lived in the US in complete obscurity for decades, developing his peculiar theories (he believed Russians have yeti/abominable snowman blood, among other things). Late in life he was rediscovered by comics fans led by Glenn Bray. I actually met Szukalski once and spoke with him for several hours. He was very interesting and possibly quite mad. On the same day, he appeared at a Dallas comics con; he didn’t know where he was and they didn’t know who he was. It was highly surreal.

The image here is one of his many proposals for massive public works, none of which were built.

Fascinating piece!  Does remind me of some of the patriotic sculptures put out by the USSR, esepcially the Motherland Monument in Kyiv!!!

Oh, yes, there's a certain monumental vibe to Szukalski's work that does put one in mind of totalitarian art, despite the fact that he had no sympathy with the actual regimes...

The scale of these would have rivaled any national monuments and would be seen for miles away.  He thinks big and maybe above the clouds is where his genius and madness meet.

Love the art. The background story seems like the basis of a fascinating biography. Congrats on the art.

Thanks! By the way, for those who have Netflix, there's a really good biographical film on Szukalski called "Struggle"  -- well worth a watch.

I like Szukalski even if he did go mad the poor soul. Given his background and timeframe its clearly no accident that his work often reminds people of eastern bloc heroic monumental sculpture or totalitarian art if you like.  But I don't think he was trying to emulate it so much as transform it into something else. But who knows for sure?
