I started reading SF voraciously when I was a kid in the early 70's. I loved the Heinlein juveniles and at that time they all had covers by Darrell Sweet. I've always wanted one of his SF covers but have never found one, but then this piece by Sweet became available. Although not a Heinlein cover, it evokes that same vibe and period -- and it is very SF. I love the mixing of time periods, the "hour glass" city, and especially that "Space Bison" staring at the viewer!

Fantastically throwing in everything into this painting shows a great freedom and joy in its creation. Truly an upbeat world we can be more interested in to get us buying the book.

Since it is a "best of" compilation, I assume this is a kind of parade of Smith characters through time & space (man-of-the-future, lizard men, hawk men, robots, centurians, etc.). I haven't read this book but will give it a go soon ; )
