Description

I've mentioned several times before, that I'm a big fan of horror films and the like. So, naturally, Halloween is my favorite time of year. Which means you've likely become accustomed to me posting up something here befitting the season. And, as I have in years past, I shall not disappoint you.

This page from the classic Warren series Creepy, is exactly what any true horror buff, like myself, would love. Vampires have always had the best P.R. in horror storytelling. They are sexy and sophisticated, even when they are doing the most evil of deeds. There's just something about them, that holds a special place in our psyches, which is why we both fear and respect them. Maybe it's the intimate act of bloodsucking, or maybe it's their ability to have near-immortality, while still being able to blend in with the rest of us, that gives them an air of coolness, than none of the other classic monsters can match.

Artist Dave Cockrum isn't a name you'd probably have first come to mind, when you think of great horror art, as his biggest claim to fame is helping to make the X-Men a household name, but early in his career he got his start in horror. In fact, this page is from only his 5th ever published work, as Warren was the first professional comic company to bring his art style to the masses. He shows off the deft skills of dynamic camera angles, which he would use in his later work, but what really impressed me here, is both his excellent use of shadow and light, on par with some the great "horror masters" of comics, like Bernie Wrightson and Gene Colan, and his incredible shading technique, with that "peppery" tone to show gradations in the shadows. It displays a sense of nuance and refinement to the art that I didn't see so much of in his later works, which would be much more popular. And all of this was done in pencil alone, if you can believe it. Trust me, there's not a single drop of ink on this page! It speaks to the skills of a young artist who is hungry and looking to prove their worth.

It's always a joy to pick up a piece from an artist, which shows you the passion they have for the artform. This very early work from Cockrum stands out in just that way. I think I actually prefer it to what would later become his more notable style. And when you add the fact that this piece is 50 years old now, it only increases your appreciation of the artist's skills. This page certainly falls into the realm of "treat" and not "trick," for me. And hopefully it has for you, as well. Just be sure to keep a close eye on the shadows and watch your neck. Happy Halloween!

This is a very fantastic find to see the origins of his legendary career.  The dread comes across well with an underlying musical score of organ pipes that reaches a tension of climatic heights when the vampire decides to quench his thirst.
