Description

This original early Onionhead/Slimer drawing by concept and storyboard artist Thom Enriquez was made for the production of Ghostbusters (1984). Showcased in the 1989 Criterion Collection LaserDisc release's special features, the piece represents an early Prismacolor pencil rendering of the gelatinous green ghost.

The illustration also appears on page 73 of the 1985 behind-the-scenes book Making Ghostbusters and on page 81 of the 2015 art book Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History.

Just as "Onionhead," Slimer's nickname back then, underwent evolutionary cosmetic changes, so, too, did his role in the flick. The shooting script gives the ghoul even more screen time to wreck havoc on the Sedgewick Hotel—both inside and out.

One filmed-but-deleted scene sees the vapor traveling through an air vent to stink up the suite bathroom of a honeymoon couple who had consummated their marriage only moments earlier.

Another unused sequence has Onionhead fleeing from the Ghostbusters by passing through a solid wall in the hallway and coming out the other end just in time to ruin a freshly dry-cleaned white dinner jacket being held by a well-dressed man in his room.

The street vendor's otherworldly encounter with the entity also plays out differently in an earlier draft; the pushcart where Slimer chows down on hot dogs was at one point stationed directly outside of the hotel, where it moves on its own accord to follow the eternally hungry phantom back into the building, with the sausage seller not far behind, giving chase.
