DescriptionThis original vaporous Onionhead/Slimer drawing by concept and storyboard artist Thom Enriquez was made for the production of Ghostbusters (1984). Done in Prismacolor pencil, the artwork shows an alternate, entirely indistinguishable take on the audience-favorite apparition as nothing more than a wall-eyed waft of mist. Tack holes at the top corners indicate its usage during the development of the biggest comedy blockbuster of the 1980s.The illustration appears on page 80 of the 2015 art book Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History. As recounted in the 2020 retrospective book Ghostbusters: The Inside Story, Enriquez heard two men in a crowded Burbank sushi bar shouting to each other over the noise about needing pre-production artists for an upcoming film. "Being an opportunist, I rudely interrupted them," Enriquez recalled. The pair turned out to be none other than former National Lampoon magazine art director Michael C. Gross and future Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Enriquez showed them to his car where he kept a portfolio of his work, and he was all but hired there in the alleyway. He soon came on board the burgeoning crew of artists, which included Bernie Wrighston, Tanino Liberatore, Brent Boates, and Robert Kline, and was tasked with coming up with what Reitman called "free-form designs" for the story's various envisioned supernatural special effects.
