Description

In the non-stop stream of awesomeness that was ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ (and every titular variation thereof), my favorite run of issues was the stretch that Brian Bendis and David Lafuente crafted together. By this time the center-stage cast had expanded from Peter, MJ, and Aunt May to include Bobby Drake (Iceman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Gwen Stacy (the three of whom were actually living with Peter and May), and Kitty Pride and Kong. It was during this phase that the teen drama reached (soap-)operatic heights, with cucumber-cool Johnny tutoring hot-mess Bobby on the art of picking up girls; with MJ’s insecurity about Gwen living in the same house as Peter; with Kitty dating Kong; with the eternal struggle of Peter gamely attempting to keep his identity secret with his two less-than-discreet “cousins” (Johnny and Bobby) living with him in a hilarious ‘Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends’ riff…

And the artistic stylings of David Lafuente fit the material to a “T”; young, fresh, energetic, exciting…. Even in the context of the impossibly high standard of quality that had been set before him by previous series artists Mark Bagley and Stuart Immonen, each issue was something very special, nailing the timeless, intoxicating cocktail of what comprises that most wonderful of things: great Spider-Man comics.

It is downright thrilling to be able to display a cast shot of everyone here; Peter, MJ, Gwen, Bobby, Johnny, Kitty - all in the inimitable Lafuente style.

At this time, David drew his art pages on two separate 8.25 x 11.75 inch pieces of bristol, which were then stitched together in production. This is the top of page 9 if you count the recap page as page 1 (which David must have done, judging by his numbering here…), but it is actually the eighth page of artwork in the book.

Sincere thanks only begin to scratch the surface - thank you, David (and Lafuente Cats :) )!

While the Bagley work o nthis title is my personal favourite of the run, with Immonen's work coming in second, I have to admit that although the LaFuente art was what I considered to be somewhat "out of the norm", he has a clean, slick style that i actually still appealing to me. I'm not gonna lie though, I'm left shaking my head wondering what he was thinking when he decided to draw on half sized sheets of paper. I personally never read the entire series. I think I read up to trade paperback volume 13 or 14, but I have to say that due to your great description, I may make the effort to eventually catch up on everything I missed. Who knows, I may even attempt to start from the beginning and try to read the entire series from start to finish. The thought ofthat overwhelms me tremendously though!

Oh, wow!  I really enjoyed David Lafuente's take on the characters, capturing a youthful energy that was perfect for the title. And I love the facial expressions here.  Wonderful piece!

LaFuente's art renewed that Ultimate Spider-Man is still a teenager even after tragedies and battles that weighed heavy on the character.  It is more bright and fast paced to fit in with the quick banter and interpersonal relationships that are the backbone of every Spider-Man comic series. The teenage team up dynamic of the book projected a lot more optimism and fun.

That's really interesting. I wonder why he chose to do it in two smaller pages that were stitched in production? I'm always fascinated by process. Very nice art, too. Love all the characters, and the easy emotion of the high school scene. Great finds, Jason. Congrats!

While not my own fav' artist on Ultimate, David was perfectly suited for the material, bringing another kind of freshness to it due to his Manga influences.

Big congrats, man!  I know you're stoked to have picked up these 2 Ultimate Spidey Lafuente pages - RIGHT up your alley!  This is a great one as it's got the whole gang, and you gotta love the expressions on everyone throughout!  Definitely an exemplary piece as far as visually representing Lafuente's run on the book.  As you say, was a perfect marriage of artistic style and teen drama craziness :)
