Description

Up for sale is an original preliminary cartoon for Playboy done in ink and watercolor. It features a lost and found theme. The caption reads "Can you help me? -- Sorry Mac, but what I've just lost, you couldn't find."

This piece was done by renowned British cartoonist Francis Wilford-Smith (1927-2009) who went by the pen name "Smilby", who did work for Playboy for over 30 years. He also did work for Esquire, The New Yorker and many other publications. I am unsure if he got the ok for a published version of this piece or if it only made it to this "rough" stage.

The piece is in excellent condition and measures a large 11" x 15". It would look great framed. There is a small crease in the lower left corner.

I may have seen these cartoons in the past but it wasn't until recently I gained an appreciation for them. It was a Smilby cartoon on Heritage. A woman bent over a bed, her breasts hanging out while her lover stands by the window looking at a couple walking by. The caption read "What an odd pair." and her eyes are wide. Never drink near the laptop. It sold but not to me. This will do.
