Description

D.C. Comics. October, 2008.

The Joker Graphic Novel: Bermejo's most popular work. Azzarello, Bermejo and Gray really hit this book out of the park and it's no wonder why it gets ranked with the best Joker stories of all time. It's noteworthy to see the novel's original title labelled "Joker: Dark Night" on the top left, a project name changed due to the Dark Knight film. It's now firmly established that Bermejo incorporated the feature into the character prior to the Dark Knight film production. There is a Joker Easter Egg in Luthor: Man of Steel #3 (20050 depicting a Joker with the Glasgow smile. Lee had also released character sketches of Joker around the same time. Then Joker was drawn from late 2006 to Feb. 2008.

Bermejo's version of the Joker has become iconic and I just love everything about this page. It's one of the seminal action pages in a comic without many action sequences. Joker survives a crash perpetrated by Dent's undercover cops, and covered in glass he kills a few and makes his escape. In a story where he controls the madness this was a memorable beat where Joker momentarily lost control. There's even a Killer Croc appearance in the top panel. I think the hand lettered sound effects give an added bonus. A big thanks to Mike for the trade.

This scene is incredibly similar to the climax in the Dark Knight chase when Harvey dent is being transported. Batman flips the semi truck and Joker recovers from the crash and begins shooting virtually the same way.

I stopped by Brian Azzarello's booth at NYCC 2024 and got him to sign this page at the bottom margin. A highlight of the con!

The night we met I knew I need Bermejo
And if I had the Joker I'd never let it go
Bold inks of Gray you will see
I'll make sounds all surround me
We'll make 'em turn their heads every place we go

So won't you, please, (be my, be mines baby)
Be my little baby, (my one and only maybe)
Say you'll be my darlin', (be my, be my crazy)
Be my baby now (I'm done and in therapy)
Wha oh oh oh

Wow, I'm so surprised Mike let this go. But anyway, it's a great page and a great coup for you to be able to acquire it!

You and me both Ruben! Hope all is well! Phil and I are friends from the IG days so this one feels like it stayed in the family. I do miss it though hahah!

Bermejo and Gray's grim and gritty Joker rises above its Heath Ledger inspirations to be its own thing, and I think it will probably last the test of time (but what really makes the page for me is the old school onomatopoeia lettering -- I think Alex Toth would have approved).

One of the best (and most frightening) renditions of the Joker in any medium.

This was my page once upon a time. Bought it directly from Mick Gray. It was the first time he was making his share available (this would have been around 2006?). I picked my two favorite pages from his stack, this being one of them. Both eventually traded away. Great to see this one again.

Absolutely stunning page from Lee Bermejo's Joker Graphic Novel! That book had a lot of memorable pages, but this one really grabs me for some reason. What a crazy action-packed page with the Joker really amping up the violence!  Fabulous pick-up, congrats!
