DescriptionDetective Comics (Vol. 1) #1027 Wraparound Cover Original Art (DC, November 2020). Detective 1027 was a huge issue celebrating the 1000th issue since Batman was introduced in Detective Comics. As DC likes to do these days for key or important issues, there were about half a million different variants, and I can only rattle off a handful of them myself. What can sometimes be forgotten is that they also tend to choose a very iconic image for the main cover and give it the royal treatment. For Detective Comics 1000, Jim Lee had the honor of doing a killer wraparound cover. DC decided to also feature a wraparound for the main 1027, but the honors this go around were done by the amazing Andy Kubert. This cover has everything you would want in a key anniversary homage issue. The main cover is graced with a menacing iconic image of the Dark Knight himself, surrounded by flying bats with glass breaking and his shadow portrayed on the side of a building in a shout out to the bat signal. The back cover memorializes the moment in Crime Alley when Bruce's parents died, ultimately leading him to be The Bat. It also features his long time ward Dick Grayson (as Robin) and his father figure and long time butler Alfred Pennyworth. All of this in front of a backdrop of the Gotham cityscape in all its somberness. Kubert's style is instantly recognizable, and the level of details he put into this composition are astounding, including the shading in the inking to create the various shadow and lighting effects. It has the right mix of respecting the history of the Dark Knight while giving it a more modern feel. Such a captivating image and instant modern grail for me. Accomplished in ink over graphite on two 11" X 17" art boards taped together just like a Double Page Splash, but even better since it is a cover! Wow! Wow! Wow! Magnificent Batman wraparound cover! Love the front cover image of Batman--It's so very iconic! And the back cover with young Bruce Wayne moments after his family is murdered is extraordinary! Kubert really put this one out of the park!

Yup, love this double cover. Kubert's one of my favorite artists as his stuff just feels like the classic comic look but ramped up some. Reminds me of Mike Zeck that way. I mean...not much more you could ask for in a Kubert OR Bats piece, man. Congrats!
