Description

11.69" x 16.54" (A3) pen and ink

The concept for this commission was Death accompanying Swamp Thing as he lays to rest the remains of Alec Holland. This was an idea I had swirling around in my head that was inspired from a number of different sources including fellow Sandman collector Rob C's "in which" series; a beautiful Michael Zulli Swamp Thing painting; and Sandman #19 (my favourite self contained story from the series).

I had originally intended to commission Michael Zulli for the idea and after making contact it was clear he was done with comic art at this point.

Then I saw the wonderful work Mike Perkins was doing on the most recent series of Swamp Thing and thought he was more than competent at capturing the feeling of the piece.

Though he was to appear at Thought Bubble 2021, after reaching out 2-3 months well in advance, hearing nothing back and guests dropping out like flies, it wasn't looking hopeful. Then Ruben completely dashed my dreams further when he informed me how busy Mike was with art on Swamp Thing and moving back to the UK!

But Mike is the GOAT... He unbelievably turned this around in about a week! No, "sorry I didn't have time" or "let me ship it out", no he actually managed to deliver and send me over a scan days before the convention! Guests I had reached out to as far back as February couldn't complete a commission request (they still haven't even completed them lol)! To say I was impressed by how he turned this around and delivered truly left me floored.

I believe it also ended up being used as a cover for a Swamp Thing fanzine.

To be fair, I only relayed the information Mike gave me himself. But I DID still suggest you reach out to him anyway, so I may have initially dashed your hopes, but by suggesting you reach out, I also take some measure of credit for you getting this fabulous piece done after all! 😃
