DescriptionHere we have an incredible X cover by Jason Pearson. This was a variant cover to X-Men Gold 23 despite the fact that it is obviously a New Mutants cover, Jason's homage to the great Demon Bear saga. Now the first thing to say about it is that Jason himself was quite pleased by the result, one of his best according to him actually, not an easy thing for him if you follow him on social media, but complained that Marvel didn't even care to list him in as cover artist in the credits. Which is not something an editor should forget. Now the cover itself is mind-blowing. Jason couldn't be more different an artist than Bill Sienkiewicz and yet this homage contains everything. The fact that Jason used the maw of the Demon bear as a frame is such a brilliant idea. Written on paper, the concept would not be something one could imagine an easy thing to pull and yet it works so well. The over-extended jaw, the fangs, the nose, the wide semi closed eyes and all the drops of saliva are so many great elements of the overal composition. Then Mirage, Dani Moonstar. He drew her as a teen, not a bimbo. I absolutely love her big braids and how she is respectfully holding her bow, like a ritualistic object, instead of the usual (tiring?) pointing at the reader stance. It gives an eerie calm to the piece. I also love how Jason highlighted the two arrows heads with his inks, leading the reader's eye down. And of course, the incredibly bold move of shadowing half of her head. This precise choice plus the two native Americans zombies/demons/corpses/ghouls framing her inside the maw make for such a great mood. The piece is oozing creepiness. From a stylish point of view, I love all the different techniques Jason used. Strong black inks, light crosshatching for rendering, broken lines (on the fangs) and splatter for the saliva drops (not visible on the scan sadly). With a strong nod to Michael Golden 90s period for the bear, one of Jason's biggest influences, especially his upper head. The man is simply put a MONSTER of an artist. This is my tenth and last piece of my 2022 CAF celebration. Hope you enjoyed it. Social/Sharing |

I know you really like his work, but he's literally your FAVOURITE artist? The Golden influence is strong with this one! A very beautifully illustrated piece, no doubt about it. Big congrats on acquiring it!

I've loved Jason's work since his days on the Legion, and the continued evolution of his style has been amazing to behold. This is a wonderful cover for all of the reasons you mentioned in the description.

A true beauty! That is a spectacular homage to Sienkiewicz and New Mutants. He even dropped in the detailed Native American characters rendered in a different style to the rest of the page, like Sienkiewicz would do here and there in NM. And framing it with the Demon Bear's open maw? Yeah, agreed, he's one hell of an artist. On the list he goes. Great finale to your birthday week, Fred. Congrats!

Amazing precision and stellar control providing some of the most intricate details in the areas that he inks around. The power of image. It comes across as it's own composition while evoking the past and honors the tradition of storytelling of the original tale.

Beautiful cover, Fred - and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I love the old school baggy gloves here, and with Dani flanked by the cadavers, her shaded eyes, and her calm in the eye.. er, mouth... of the storm, it also feels to me like a reference to the character's journey as a Valkyrie (via Hela's boon), which would provide a new calm (one would imagine) in the (literal) face of such monsters. Incredible composition and brilliant execution - the perfect piece to cap off such an excellent birthday countdown! Sincere congrats, F M! (*singing off key*: "And maaany MOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRE!" :) )

Oh, man THERE it is. I remember seeing this for sale here on CAF, and half stepping in my decision making. And yep, took a tad too long and it was sold. Should've known where it went. You are a Pearson fan, right? ;) Seriously, though, huge congrats. Love Jason's take on Dani and the Demon Bear mythos here. Such a great unique graphic sense realized, and the execution? Tops. Color me green with envy, man. Dani definitely done right.

I'd never seen this image before today. It's fantastic. Dani's one of my favorite characters. It's immediately apparent that Pearson was a fan, too. His depiction of her is so faithful to Bob McLeods original vision, showing her pride and modest physical proportions, while giving us a reminder of Sienkiewicz's best work on the series. I'm envious of this one!
I hope Jason has found the peace in death that seemed to elude him in life. RIP.
