DescriptionWelcome back to Shemp's gallery. Missed last week, so today we get twofer. To continue the theme from last week we have another Lobo title splash. Considering how popular Lobo was back in the early to mid 90's there isn't much art posted from his monthly series. After the highly successful Lobo mini-series, Lobo was given his own monthly series written by Al Grant with art by Val S Semeiks and John Dell. The Lobo monthly series was over the top fun. Val Semeiks and John Dell were the perfect art team. Lobo #10 pg 2 "Preacher Wars: Part the First" written by Alan Grant with art by Val Semeiks and John Dell. Social/Sharing |

Semeiks and Alan Grant were a great team on the Demon and then Lobo. Over the top stories that were enjoyable reads. Both splashes that you posted today are a lot of fun. One of these days new creators will come along who can recapture the Lobo magic of the 1990s seen here.

I'm guessing I'm in the small minority of comic readers who didn't care for Lobo and to this day don't get what the appeal is. But since I was into comics more for the art than the stories, I still checked the comic out every month, particularly since I had been a Conan reader when Semeiks broke in at Marvel on that title. I also enjoyed looking at his work on The Demon. Can't speak to the quality of the stories myself, but the art was good, as evidenced by this splash.

I could see Lobo not being for everyone. In the case of this series, I thought Alan Grant did a pretty good job of making Lobo ridiculous without mocking the character or the readers. I thought Semeiks was perfect for the book because he knew how to add an almost cartoonish quality in places that worked well for the stories.

The attitude is presented with brash boldness and snide edgy humor that marked the era!
