DescriptionWelcome back to another new art Sunday here at Shemp's gallery.Today we acknowledge one of the more prolific writers of the late 80's and 90's. Alan Grant burst upon the scene as the writer of Detective Comics (1987-1990) with Norm Breyfogle as the artist. Grant and Breyfogle eventually moved to the Batman title )1990-1992). It was a legendary run. His stories and Breyfogle:s art were a perfect match. If that was all he did that would be enough. He also revitalize along with Keith Giffen, a little known character, Lobo. He wrote and created L.E.G.I.O.N. 89. In 1990 he was the writer of the Demon. In 1993 he was the writer of the Lobo monthly. In 1992 DC Comics gave Grant his own Batman title, Batman: Shadow of the Bat. In 1997 Grant reunited with Breyfogle on an Anarky limited series, a character created by both Grant and Breyfogle, and again in 1999 for an Anarky monthly. For a guy who contributed so much to the lore of DC Comics during the 1990's Alan Grant doesn't get talked about much. Damn shame! Loved Alan Grant as writer. Grant and Breyfogle were the premier Batman creators of the 90's. No one even came close. Celebrating a fantastic writer/ artist duo, on what would have been Norm's 62nd birthday. Happy birthday Norm. From 1999 Anarky #2 by Norm Breyfogle and Joe Rubenstein. Cover looks so much better in black and white. Social/Sharing |

Not familiar with the series or the character. I gather he is a villian, but here he has a Green Lantern ring? That can't be good. Except as a cover, and then here it is very good. Congrats.

I agree 100% with your comments regarding Alan Grant. He was one of DC's most prolific writers during the 1990s, and he was excellent. And this cover? Outstanding work by Breyfogle.

I never read Anarky and know nothing about him, but that never stopped me from appreciating the art! It's a wonderful job by Breyfogle and Rubinstein. I agree, after a great, fondly remembered 5 year run on Batman across the 2 main titles, it's somewhat odd that the fans of the art also tend to have fond memories of the stories, but for some inexplicable reason fans always tend to only mention Breyfogle and you rarely hear Alan Grant's name attached.

It uses an universally understood pose that is expressively dramatic storytelling on the cover. Breyfogle's hands acts as an extension of the emotions of the character and this shows pure power. Grant gets overshadowed by the flashy artists he works with and other hot writers that come and go, but his creation of Anarchy, Mr. Zsasz, etc. plus work on Lobo and Batman during the Knightfall crossover and beyond shows how well he worked within the system.

So much energy to this pin-up, in terms of the character's pose and expression, as well as the actual energy emanating from his fist, with the impact going all the way to the edges of the board. Great stuff! Congrats!
