Description
The word grail gets tossed around a lot in this hobby… and I think that’s because it means something different to everyone… to some people it is the most expensive… the biggest status symbol… to others it is how important it is to you , and that could be because of the importance of the artist character or story… I tend to use word grail for something important to me. And to me this is a grail!! I am a 45 year old man who collects comic art , specifically X-men comic art. And this can all be traced back to a fateful day in 1983 when 6 year old me was given a copy of X-men 175 by Chris Claremont and Paul Smith … it was the perfect issue to catch my young imagination… I often say had it been 174 or 176 I may have been a Spiderman or avengers fan.. or not a comic fan at all! When I started collecting OA a page from this book was my ultimate goal.. but as you know Paul Smith X-men pages are not easy to come by… and specifically a couple issues near the end of his run are impossible… well this wonderful page now is in my home and will not be going anywhere!! Thank you so much to Zane for allowing me the chance to buy it… and to Ankur who’s voracious searching found it and remembered my thirst for a page!

It's a great page from the villain's speech and characterization as well. He almost persuades you to empathize, until you remember he's glossed over the fact that what she did to him was completely his fault.

A great Dark Phoenix page from the special double sized Paul Smith farewell issue!  It points back at those fateful Issues when Dark Phoenix  was born out of Mastermind's manipulation.

Exquisite and rare.  PMS's art on Uncanny was balanced and classy, with impeccable storytelling and characterisation.  This is a great example. Well done!

Hells YES, Jason!  HUGE congrats, man!  A page from the book that started the X addiction - can't get much better.  You gotta love the line work throughout, and that 4th panel is next level.  Love the inks.  I'm sure you'll be poring over for weeks and weeks!

Hi JL! I appreciate the comment... I have been drooling over your splash from the book since the day I started my CAF account.. I think that was the first piece I searched for! A mutual friend told me you may have more pages from this book.. I would LOVE to see them if you ever feel like posting them. Thanks

When the highest levels of nostalgia meet up with cool art, you certainly have got yourself a grail. I wish every collector could get a page from the first book that they read. And what a sweet page! I especially like that fourth panel. Very dynamic. Big, nostalgic congrats!

Cheers on getting a page from such a meaningful issue. Smith's art is so elegant and fluid, even on a dialogue-heavy page like this. In fact, Smith, who drew such wonderfully expressive faces, may have been the best X-Men artist when it came to giving visual appeal to Claremont's more exposition-heavy pages.
