Description
This is a very nice cover recreation of Spidey 37 (1983) by the original cover artist, J.-Y. Mitton. Spidey translated 3 different Marvel books and the publishing roster would change over the years.

This is a special add on to the third French artist edition devoted to Photonik, one of the two main French super heroes out of the 80s. Two of those were devoted to Mitton's work of the character which he didn't create but spent some time drawing.

Those were limited to 50 and once made available, the publisher's site crashed down due to demand. I managed to scoop one (likely the last one) and was then told that the server crashing wouldn't happen again once the recreations were made available (as you bought them sight unseen and had to choose later on). And of course, once the drawings were made available to pick, the site crashed down again. How's that for professionalism? Resulting in me getting probably my tenth choice out of 50. The result is certainly not bad as Mitton sometime chose to recreate covers, illustrations but also panels which I didn't care much for.

Now please realize that Mr Mitton is now 77 years old and I've found other artists of his age to be less apt. He was called the French John Buscema in French speaking countries due to the similarities between both. The strong and bold figure work, the attention to the hands, etc...After his super hero period, he went on to work for many History themed series for mainstream Franco-Belgian publishers on which is style fully exploded, not being held down by monthly time constraints (not that his SH work was lame by any mean).

He is now dabbling into SH work again due to a nostalgia induced popular demand through commissions (of which a superb example can be seen in this very gallery) and the odd new short story here and there.

Though not my first choice, this is still a great commission, a cover recreation to boot and I especially love the mixed media approach (i.e. the watercolor touch inside the windows which makes the figure pop).

Below, you can see the original cover.

Thank you Mr Mitton.

I suppose because I live in Québec, I used to see some issues of this title and other French/Belgian reprints of American superheroes in comic shops from time to time. I don't know if it was because they received some distribution here or if it was simply that people brought them back after travelling to Europe, but I always enjoyed seeing them.

It was always interesting to see how superheroes were handled, artistically speaking, by artists overseas. I've always felt that Jean-Yves Mitton's work had a very late 70's/early 80's Marvel approach, which of course was what I loved most back when I first got into comics in the early 80's. This is not only a well done recreation, but as you mention, Mitton clearly still has all his abilities even at 77 years of age. Félicitations!

Looks just like it did pubished.  The long forearms are a great exaggeration to show the expressive hands!

Yeah, he hasn't lost "it." That's a very cool cover recreation. I like that watercolor, too. That's a tight edge for that kind of work. I wasn't aware of the artist, but I can see the comparison to JB. Especially in the busts on the original cover. Also, something about the color job, gives it a little bit of a Ditko look, too. I don't know why, just something about it in the face on the main character. Very cool that you could snag one. Congrats!

This is a really cool piece, F M.  A rarely available original piece by an artist who made a significant contribution to an important series from your youth?  Yeah - winning.  I can absolutely understand your frustration about the site crashing (twice!) when securing your spot in line for choosing a recreation, but (speaking as one on the "outside"), I think your choice was a really good one.  The recreation certainly looks to include lots more watercolor / wash / tone detail on the body, and J H is right about the impressive edge on the watercolors amidst the shards of glass.  It certainly looks to be much more finished than the original!  A really strong piece that speaks to Mr. Mitton still being in accomplished command of the toolbox!  Good on him, and congrats to you for scoring this fine piece from an important artist from your youth - congrats!
